In 2006 l managed to meet Prof Mudhovozi and by then he had not yet started his PhD studies at University of Venda in South Africa(UNIVEN). What necessitated our first meeting was because of an academic intercourse were upon l had been admitted as an undergrad student in psychology at Masvingo state University now Great Zimbabwe University. Prof Mudhovozi by then was the department chairperson and was also our lecturer for Introduction to psychology. In taking us for every lecture he would start by respectfully proffering salutations to us by saying ‘Ladies and Gentleman….’ . lts not just that he only gave words with respect but also that we could feel the respect coming behind those words.
In the same year to my coming we wrote an inclass test which had some aspects of neurotransmitters in its content, l did attained a mark in the range of 50% being concerned about my mark, l asked him in a concerned manner about my grades in psychology. Upon doing so he comforted me by telling me that my performance was good and went on to show me several papers which had marks below mine, but he had obscured the names of the persons concerned. I was encouraged to say the least especially the words coming from him and in his capacity as a chairperson.
In 2008 l came back to Great Zimbabwe University to continue with my second semester of first year. Professor Mudhovozi being privy to the information that l had been from a suspension did not treat me with prejudice. On realizing that l and a certain fellow had one course which was now not being offered created a course for us called history of psychology. It seemed as a make shift arrangement but letter on l came to the realization that the course helped us understand psychology in depth. We were joined by other students who took it as an optional course.
It was unfortunate that the other semester did not occur as a result of political failure lead by Mr Mugabe and his anarchist fellows in ZANU-PF in 2008. At the reopening of my second year studies in 2009 Prof Mudhovozi had left to UNIVEN to pursue his PhD studies. I managed to meet with him here in Zimbabwe and twice at Musina boarder post were upon he would great me discuss a lot about politics and academics, so soft spoken and had clarity in matters which he spoke. I did meet him some time after 2012 were upon he told me that he was now a professor. It was great joy to say the least at the entrance of an internet cafe opposite central police station in Masvingo.
In 2015 I was fortunate to have Professor Mudhovozi being one of my lecturer at masters level were upon he lead me through the following modules psychometrics, psychopathology and postmodern therapies. Throughout his course outlines it was clear that he was knowledgeable and respectful and made it clear that diversity should be upheld. It was a wonder to have him guide you. His teaching approach made sure that there was no collegisation of a university, he ensured that students should search for knowledge and bring it into the class.
I had the opportunity to meet Professor Mudhovozi after graduating at post grad level and with the same respect he greated me and assisted me with an institutional report to assist me with registration as a psychologist. In that letter he spoke glowingly of my abilities. As a dean and a full professor he remained sober, approachable and human. To me he was a brilliant mind. A person worthy to be remembered.
